I donated to The Greater Chicago Food Depository today. They always work hard to keep people safe and healthy but in the times of COVID their work has become more challenging and more important. Chicago's leaders are, responsibly, keeping much of the city closed indefinitely to slow the spread of the virus. Meanwhile, we watch as our neighbors “open for business.”
That means less cash for folks across the city. Less cash means less food and more struggling. While no single person can stop the cycle, those who “have” can come together and give to people who need it. At the risk of getting preachy, I’d say we must do so out of responsibility to our peers.
The Depository said that my donation will pay for 300 meals. Those 300 meals are served by volunteers and prepared by them, too, I think. So it’s a group effort. Getting out of this miserable situation will be a group effort. I want to be part of that group.
Please, if you can give, give. I wish the U.S. could respond swiftly and pay for everyone to safely stay at home. That hasn’t happened and I highly doubt it will happen anytime soon.
